Let me tell you about the “thousand-log” or “hazarashen” ceilings, a famous technique for building solid roofs in Armenia and our region known for ages. By putting numerous logs one on top of the other, the so called dome got a square, rectangular or octagonal shape, leaving the top frame open as a source of light, known as “yertik”. Houses with these roofs were called the major homes, or literally translated “head houses” – “glkhatoun”, where the most important event for the whole community was taking place – the bread baking rituals. This smart detail of secular architecture was then adapted for stone constructions in medieval Armenia.

There are many types of hazarashen roofs, but I took two types and combined them into one composition. How do you like it?
